Calling All Weekend Warriors! | Schwallier’s Country Basket News

There is so much fall fun to be had over at our farm, we’re not quite sure where to start. How about this?: Head on out to our CORN MAZE this weekend, where you will have a blast trying to get through it. Every year, we create a completely unique maze adventure based around a fun, educational theme. This year’s theme is Deep Sea Adventure! To get through the maze, you’ll have to answer questions by finding clues in the corn. Ideal for families, friends, youth or scouting groups… anyone who wants to have fun, really! The corn maze is open Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. (last tickets are sold at 5; the farm market closes at 6 both days.) If you are looking for something active, challenging and fun to do this weekend, this is it. Come on out and get lost!

Race for Raspberries

Our berry patch is bursting. Raspberries continue to ripen until the first frost, so hurry out while the weather is nice and pick as much as you can! We offer u-pick, as well as berries already picked available for purchase in the market. Try all four of the varieties we grow: Polana (large and sweet); Jaclyn (gorgeous dark red color, firm, sweet); Carolina (large, very sweet); and Heritage (juicy, sweet, great for freezing). We’d love to hear what you like to use raspberries for… we eat ’em fresh off the bush, make jam with them, sometimes bake them into pies, and freeze them to use later in smoothies and other goodies. Don’t let summer slip away without getting some of these delicious berries!

Bonfires

One of the most fun, but lesser known activities that we offer at Schwallier’s Country Basket are bonfires. Groups (five people or more) can schedule a private bonfire on weekend nights. Bonfires are after market hours, so you get the place to yourself. Bring flashlights and head on out into the corn maze for an unforgettable experience, then relax and kick back around the fire (once you find your way out!). You can either bring your own supplies, or we can provide them for you: $9/person for our bonfire kit, which includes s’mores, a hot dog and bottled water (plus entry to the maze). Bonfires are available weekends when the corn maze is open. Call us (616-785-9896) now to make sure your group gets the chance to have fun under the stars out on the farm this fall!

Demo Sunday

This weekend marks the return of Demo Sunday, where you can check out our son-in-law Adam, a chef with The Gilmore Collection in Grand Rapids, cooking up a storm at the market. He’ll show you what’s fresh and flavorful, and give you great ideas and helpful tips for how to prepare it at home. Join us Sunday at 1 p.m. for his cooking demonstration.

Barn Raising

In case you missed it over on our Facebook page (like and follow us if you haven’t already to stay up-to-date with what’s going on out at our farm), we’ve been having a big old barn raising this week! We are thrilled with the progress the team of Amish workers is making on rebuilding the barn, which we had taken down last fall from a location about a mile away. It’s a 100+ – year-old barn that had seen better days… and now it will see better days again as we breathe new life into it. We’re still hammering out our final plans for it, but this old barn will give us the space to grow our operations and to give you even more of all the things you already love about Schwallier’s Country Basket. Stop by to see the barn going up right in the middle of our orchard!

A-B-C-D on the Farm

All of the above is just some of what we offer out at the farm market. We’ve got Apples and Animals, Bees and a Barn Raising, Cider and Cow Train rides, and Donuts and… more Donuts! Come on out to experience the fun, simple pleasures of farm life for yourself! Hope to see you soon!
