The Barnyard is in Full swing | Schwallier’s Country Basket News | August 29, 2016

Come visit our rabbits, kittens, goats and chickens!

Many of you have asked, and we are happy to let you know that our animals are now back in our farm animal barn area. We have soft, sweet bunnies, curious little kittens and friendly goats. About six of our goats are pregnant as well, so we should be due for some new kids any day now! As we have in recent years, we’re planning to hold a naming contest for the first new baby goat (or in last year’s case, goats (twins!)) born this season. Be sure to follow our Facebook page to catch the details.

We are always looking to make everyone’s experience at our place as good as it can be, and to that end, this year we will be implementing a new animal barn petting policy to ensure that our furry friends are being treated with respect and care. During peak times (primarily weekends), we’ll be giving our animals periodic “break times” where we will close their pens and give them a rest from being petted. We’ll also have a handler on hand to help show children and adults how to gently and properly hold our little critters. We also ask that parents and guardians help us by making sure that children are holding and petting the animals carefully. We hope this will make for a more pleasant experience for all of our friendshuman and animal! We truly love providing our guests with the opportunity to interact with farm animals, and we hope that together, we can ensure our little creatures are treated with the care and respect they deserve. Thank you for your cooperation with this!

Pop on out to the Patch

Our raspberry patch is going strong, so you still have a chance to get fresh-picked berries while they last. They’re beautiful, sun-ripened and bursting with flavor. Eat them fresh, freeze them for later, use them in a recipe… they’re one of summer’s finest treats!

Apples update: More varieties coming soon!

We have Zestar! and Ginger Gold apples available for u-pick and in the market. SweeTango apples are set to be in the market this week. A combination of Honeycrisp and Zestar! apples, SweeTangos are juicy, crisp and full of flavor. They are only cultivated by a small cooperative of growers, so we are lucky to be able to offer them to you in our market!  We are anticipating Honeycrisps will be ready for picking sometime after Labor Day (we’ll be sure to let you know when they are via our Facebook page). We love all of these early season varieties for different reasons and for what they have in commonthey’re delicious! Come on in and get some soon… you can’t beat fresh apples!

Treats and Sweets in the Market

We know you all love a good donut, and we have plenty of them, but have you ever tried our pies? They are now available in the market. Currently we have raspberry, peach custard (limited time only), peach-raspberry (yum!) and apple pies. If you want to make sure we have the kind you want, give us a call ahead of time and pre-order your favorite(s).
